List,
This was posted on another list.

"Someone on the Steam Era Freight Car list posted the link to a useful
book digitized by Google.

"Popular picture and plan book of railroad cars and locomotives"
By Walter Arndt Lucas contains material from the 1940's Simmons
Boardman publications (Car Builder's Cyclopedia). The book is
copyright 1951, so most steam and transition modelers will find it
useful.

Please note on Page 244 picture of MP drover's caboose with an
interior view.

Also on Page 263-265 several floor plans and pictures of MP TP Eagle
cars.

Billy Click

There are several MoPac items in the book. FA1 #324, stock car, and the Texas Eagles are shown on pages 263-265. A great reference book.

Dick Ryker

Also note page 194 has an ART 27000 series horizontal-seam reefer, similar
to our model but with a 4-3 interim improved dreadnought end. I once
bashed a couple Intermountain ends from the R-40-23 kit to get this end
for use on an MDT 9000 series car (also shown on page 194), but now I
think there is a Stan Rydarowicz part for this end in resin.

This car has the 1948-50 Mopac herald with the blue-red buzzsaw, which Tom
thoughtfully has made a decal set for.

The famous MoPac stock car is also in here, on page 191.

Now, look at page 207. There is a pulpwood car, obviously at DeSoto, with
ends only a Deco designer could love. If there had been a model of this
in the sixties, I would have thought Athearn had made it up. Since I know
nothing about pulpwood, I have to ask whether these cars survived long
like this. From the dimensions, I would hazard a guess that these were
rebuilt from the 13-stake flatcars.

Also our friend the panel-side gon is on page 209.
Ron Merrick

I think the Athearn pulpwood rack is based upon the dimensional drawings in an R&ME issue-- you notice they got the ends wrong. Nonetheless, I have a couple of these mixed in with resin kits from Sunshine to break up the monotony of the Atlas GSC rack cars. If you want to do pulpwood cars in Arkansas circa 1951-1961, you need a glorious mess of these cars-- some almost decrepit to the point of being bad-order.

Texas & Pacific Muley Caboose drawings

Postby Elvin Klepzig » Thu Oct 29, 2009 5:09 pm

Possibly of interest to some in this group--
scale drawings of a 1928 30' T&P Muley Caboose by Dr. Nicholas Muff and
a photograph of caboose number 2406 by H.K. Vollrath published in the
November 2008 issue of Scale Rails.

Today I visited KU and viewed the Killam collection. It is a great asset if you haven't viewed it yet and are looking for pictures of depots and engines in Kansas. Only major drawback is that digital copies cost $5 a picture. I have to selectively choose what I wanted. I have yet to get my files so I'm still holding my breath on the quality and size of file. I'm hoping for the price they are nice.

Oh, I want to thank who ever cataloged the Missouri Pacific slides in the collection. It sure may searching easier. I wish the University would put a little more effort in the collection as it could be a great asset.

Below is several urls showing a large collection of railroad items from
John Vander Maas. What's interesting is the large number of station
and depot shots he took or collected as shown by the Iowa depot pages.
If you look at the last url there's several Missouri, Nebraska and
Kansas books of depots filed by county. The Mopac traveled through
many of these; it would be an interesting project interesting to see
what Mopac depots he photographed.

'Rails to the Osage'

Postby Elvin Klepzig » Tue Jan 26, 2010 10:38 am

There's a new Mopac book just released; 'Rails to the Osage'. Ken Bird's book covers why the railroad was originally built as a narrow gauge line, he documented the 'bios' on the various agents along the line, the coverage of the numerous wrecks (mostly caused by broken rail)and included photographs of what the right of way looks like today. The photos are neat to see with 2644 pulling the small trains through rural Missouri. 135 pages with 110 illustrations for $31 postpaid.

Book is available from Kenneth Bird, 206 East Osage Street, Lincoln, MO 65338. Order with check or money order.

Western Rail Images.com

Postby Elvin Klepzig » Tue Jan 26, 2010 4:34 pm

Man that is a super site! I'll definitely be buying some of these photos.
Some of these were published in the book on St. Louis Railroads, the title of which I cannot remember. Jim Ozment's photos are super! Lots of nice photos of structures in color!
Jerry Michels

http://www.westernrailimages.com/

While the 1927-60 era depots colors have been pretty well documented (Colonial yellow and brown) we never really had a definite lead on the red used on the water tanks and roundhouses. I've asked old modelers and railroader and all I got back was 'boxcar red' as a response. The Missouri-Illinois water tank is a real find for Mopac modelers. I have a 1900 era Sherwin Williams paint catalog and I believe the red shown on the tank is called 'Indian Red' on the chart. The chart also has a Colonial yellow and brown that matches the MP's colors so I'm assuming the railroad merely bought the dry pigments and shipped them the the job site for mixing with lind seed oil.

Great site - I've already ordered shots.

MoPac in the KC area

Postby Elvin Klepzig » Tue Jan 26, 2010 8:50 pm

I have searched the archives without much luck, and wonder if anyone knows where to locate a list of industries served by the MoPac in the KC area, preferably in the 70's or possibly the 60's?

Ron White

MoPac's document that listed the industries served was called the Circular 140. At Naperville last week I picked up a copy that had been reproduced by Rails Unlimited, from the April 1965 issue. There are 11 pages of rail-served industries listed, with some being on the MP, many on the KCT and many more served by other railroads which may have required a transfer move. I have no insight into which ones were actively enjoying traffic, but I wish I did.

Rails Unlimited probably goes to a lot of the train shows, and they are located at 126 Will Scarlet, Elgin, IL 60120, 847-697-5353 or railsunl@sbcglobal.net.

Ron Merrick

I would also be interested in this information, particularly if the era was extended back into the 1950's.
Steve Eckart

My best guess, having lived through that era, is that rail-served
industries who were active at some time in the 50s likely still had the
siding in 1965 even though nothing had run on it in years. What I don't
know is whether the siding continued to be listed even if it was dormant
(as opposed to being taken out of service).

You'd need a city directory of comparable era, which is often available in
the library, to identify the addresses of these businesses and then work
out where on the line they would have been. Addresses are only included
in this list if there are multiple locations.
